Today, I speak with Mod Sun (@ModSun), a rapper originally from Minnesota who is now based out of LA. Mod Sun, which stands for Moving On Dreams Standing Under None, brings his ingenious perspective to The Auxoro Podcast.
Despite waking up in New York, Mod Sun isn’t quite sure he really is awake. In our conversation, Mod explains how his perception changed as he recreates his “breakthrough” moment as an artist: the moment when he found purpose. Also, Mod discusses how his use of hallucinogens helped him to unlock the next steps of his career.
Mod also redefines what it means to be selfish, explaining that it should never be wrong to take care of yourself. He also shares his mindset of slow growth over a rocket rise to fame, and a close encounter with Machine Gun Kelly.
Here are a few highlights from the conversation:
When you walk into a house party, let’s say you don’t know anyone there or whose house you’re at. Are you going to be the one that goes and sits in the corner? I promise you you won’t make any friends doing that. When I walk into the room, I want to be unapologetic about being down with being embarrassed. Embarrassment is the enemy of being yourself. (4:30)
Why it’s okay to be selfish and how selfishness can unlock the truest version of yourself (10:25)
At the end, I am going to watch a movie of my life…I want my movie to be fucking brilliant. (10:45)
If you’re afraid to be told no, you can’t expect anyone to ever help you. (13:10)
Building longevity as an artist and the inspiration of Bob Dylan (18:30)
How can you know that you woke up this morning? (24:00)
Nearly stabbed by Machine Gun Kelly (28:30)
Tripping with Lil Aaron (36:00)
My biggest goal is to show the world a real-ass human being - a real-ass creative, a real-ass artist, a real person out here going fucking crazy. Crazy is my best personality trait. Crazy is just a word made up by ordinary people to explain the extraordinary (49:37)
I would like to meet you this year if you haven’t met me yet. I write books, I make art, I make music. I just want to have a fucking good time, I just want to be your friend. M-O-D-S-U-N (52:45)
