3 Lessons Learned From Navy Seal David Goggins: Managing Pain, People, & Priorities
My brother, David Grossfeld, wrote a great piece on what he learned from David Goggins’ book Can’t Hurt Me. David gets into how to block out the noise, prioritize, pushing through the pain, and more. Here’s an excerpt from the article:
A lot of people in life talk about balance. That’s okay, as people all have different priorities. One person may strive to be the best neurosurgeon in the world, dedicating countless hours to their craft, rarely spending time with their kids or family, but they are saving lives and furthering neuroscience research. And, they may be content with the fact that their priorities lay in science and medicine. Another individual may want to be a freelance writer, delegating more of their time to their family and friends, as well as traveling, because that is what they prioritize in their life. Again, that’s okay! There is no template for life, and don’t let anyone tell you that you must follow a specific path.
However, to be the best at what you do requires significant hours, sacrifices, and time. On the bell curve, most people lie right smack in the middle at the 50% mark in skillset and accomplishments in their field. But, there are people that will lead lives that seem foreign and unusual to the average observer. People may even try to bring someone down from their accomplishments or become jealous of another’s work ethic. Remember, when this happens, it is just a reflection of what the friend or colleague has experienced in their life. They may have insecurities and are viewing your life through their specific lens. Don’t let sh*t talk, haters, and Debby downers ruin your goals and accomplishments. As a successful businessman, entrepreneur, speaker, athlete, and Atlanta Hawks owner Jesse Itzler said, “don’t negotiate your goals.”
